Saving as AVI

When the AVI option button is selected the properties for AVI target files are exposed.

The standard NTSC frame rate for movies that will be played on devices produced in North America or Japan is 29.97 or 30 FPS. The European PAL standard frame rate is 25 FPS.

AVI files can be saved as very large, Full Uncompressed files or you can select a codec from the drop down list.

Codecs are installable Windows objects, some of which are installed with Windows unless and until the European Union wins the law suit that they have brought against Microsoft. Other codecs are installed by various players and software packages and you may have installed some specifically. Fx Movie Joiner was designed to use Microsoft codecs and some of the most popular third party codecs. Other codecs that conform to Windows standards should also work perfectly. Codecs that do not conform to Windows standards will produce unpredictable results.

Some codecs include an interface that will permit you to fine tune the properties. If such an interface exists you can access it with the Configure button. It may be important to note that the codec interface may actually change any setting that you make in the Fx Movie Joiner properties.

The MPEG-4 format is in fact a variant AVI format and should not be confused with MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. Two Microsoft MPEG-4 codecs are usually included with Windows Media Player as well as the current Microsoft Windows Media MPEG-4 codec. Windows Media is, of course, a sub-class as is Apple's MPEG-4 format which uses Sorenson and Cinepak MPEG-4 codecs. Other proprietary codecs such as DivX and XviD, are on in between the Video for Windows standard and a private standard. The current professional versions of both DivX and XviD are supported. You cannot use a a read only codec to create a new movie.
